Glass is a medium that allows me to express the multiplicity of queer identity and culture. Through painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and performance, I deconstruct the nuances in transgressing the boundaries of cisheteronormative, patriarchal capitalism. Glass is a ubiquitous material that helped the development of humanity technologically. It is in the windows of homes and skyscrapers, to the screens and lenses of our phones, to the vials of our vaccines. The accumulation of media and fragmentation of the queer body within the digital age interest me to use technology to experiment with glass. Working between glass and ceramics as inverse dualities of similar materialities, I am able to channel the knowledge of my ancestors in Mexico through the labor of my hands. I am inspired by the organic forms of nature and within the human body, and the temporal and spatial environments where they intersect. I document my body and sculptures within the landscape of my native homeland of New Mexico, reflecting on our impactful relationship on the earth, redefining the landscape as queer. Human organs are casted in glass, to examine the relationship of materiality and mortality, where I also photograph it in site-specific places. Found glass often adorns my installation assemblage altars that commemorate and honor my familial and cultural identity as a Mexican-American, as a way to process and mourn passed loved ones. My work seeks to represent and advocate for my Latinx familia and queer communities, who have historically been incarcerated and marginalized within the United States and in contemporary art. Glass holds many possibilities in how we can reimagine our society for a sustainable and equitable future, correcting the injustices of the past. I am reminded by the resilience of my ancestors, family, and community to continue fighting for their liberation.
